About Tatyana

Tatyana and her husband Michael

Tatyana Ivan Viderman was born in The Republic of Georgia of the former Soviet Union. Her early life was steeped in the rich cultural tradition of visual art. After graduating from High School, she moved to Saint Petersburg to study at the Krupsky Institue. On many occasions while living there she visited the Hermitage – on of the world’s finest collections of art. The diversified cultural life of St. Petersburg allowed Tatyana to study drawing, sketching, composition, photography and cinematography. When she returned from St. Petersburg to Mediterranean Georgia, she continued her studies in Georgia. Artistic expression of official Soviet art at the time was limited to the approved from of Soviet Realism. In 1979, Tatyana emigrated to the United States. Her assimilation to the culture of her new country and personal growth began a quiet incubation of her artistic skills.

She resumed her active painting studies with Mark Chatov, who delineated his art from Russian Classical tradition through his famous predecessors and teachers, his father, uncle and grandfather. Tatyana studied figure painting with Mark Chatov, figure drawing with Steve Smith, portraiture in oil with Henry Barnes, still life with Alice Williams and color theory with Sherry Baird, who also taught her to appreciate texture. She studied further with Sandy Grow, who taught her to push her own limits.

Tatyana’s work reflected her search for honest artistic invention. She seeked to convey her deepest emotions through color and form. She traveled frequently overseas to enrich her vision and understanding by interacting with the artistic traditions of Europe. However, her main inspiration came from within.
